Oceans for All: Guardians of the Marine Environment

December 8, 2023

‘Oceans for All’ Foundation, established in 2019 by David Martin and Thibault Salaun in Phuket, represents a commitment to the marine environment. As Phuket burgeoned into a major tourist destination, Martin and Salaun, both avid sea lovers and promoters, recognized the urgent need for a long-term vision to address environmental concerns. Their foundation reflects a growing global awareness of environmental issues and a dedication to preserving our oceans, the lifeblood of Earth, producing 70% of the planet’s oxygen.

The foundation’s projects are diverse and impactful. One of their key initiatives is setting up a coral farm using Dr. Jaubert’s technology, vital for restoring and preserving marine ecosystems. Coral reefs, often referred to as the rainforests of the sea, are crucial for marine biodiversity and play a significant role in protecting coastlines.

Another significant project is the shark breeding and release program aimed at restoring the food chain balance by reintroducing endangered species. Sharks, often
misunderstood and vilified, play a critical role in maintaining the health of ocean ecosystems. This initiative helps in rebalancing marine life and ensuring the sustainability of ocean habitats.

Furthering their commitment to education, ‘Oceans for All’ has collaborated with Headstart International School to create ‘Underwater Colours of Thailand,’ a book translated into four languages. This educational material serves as a tool to raise awareness about marine conservation among the younger generation, fostering a sense of responsibility and connection to the marine world.

Additionally, the foundation is actively involved in cleaning up major attractions like Phang Nga Bay, a testament to their commitment to preserving natural beauty spots for future generations. Moreover, their project ‘Team Sea Garden’ focuses on restoring coastal shore ecosystems by regrowing underwater vegetation, thereby rejuvenating marine life and habitats.

‘Oceans for All’ embodies the philosophy that the preservation of our oceans is not just an environmental concern but also essential for sustainable economic development. By garnering support from corporate partners and private sponsors, the foundation creates synergies for sustainable development, demonstrating that environmental preservation and economic progress can go hand in hand.
