Empowering Thai Youth through Education: The Impact of ‘Phuket Has Been Good To Us’

December 8, 2023

In the wake of the devastating 2004 Asian Tsunami, a beacon of hope emerged in Phuket – the 'Phuket Has Been Good To Us ‘Foundation. Established in 2005 by Tom McNamara, a local restaurateur deeply moved by the tsunami’s aftermath, the foundation embarked on a mission to provide a critical resource: English language education. Recognizing the pivotal role of language skills in securing future success, McNamara’s vision transcended traditional teaching, offering hope and opportunity to the Thai community.

Today, ‘Phuket Has Been Good To Us’ operates with a clear vision: enhancing life opportunities for Thai youth. Staffed by a dedicated team of five English teachers, the foundation delivers free English education to over 700 underprivileged children across two government schools in Phuket. Beyond language, the curriculum encompasses Maths and Science taught in English, benefiting students from 4 to 18 years of age. A noteworthy aspect is that over 200 of these students, either orphans or from challenging backgrounds, reside in school dormitories.

The foundation’s outreach extends into extra-curricular activities through the ‘Coconut Club,’ an after-school program. Here, children partake in arts, crafts, games, and cooking, further honing their English skills. This initiative not only supplements their formal education but also fosters a nurturing environment, vital for those lacking a traditional family setting. The foundation’s comprehensive care is evident in its gesture of organizing birthday celebrations for every residential student, ensuring they experience joy and a sense of belonging.

While ‘Phuket Has Been Good To Us’ has made significant strides, it’s not without its challenges. Limited resources and the need for ongoing financial support are constant hurdles. However, the foundation's resilience and community backing continue to drive its success.

The ultimate aim is to empower Thai youth with English proficiency, opening avenues to rewarding employment in Phuket's booming tourism sector. This initiative is pivotal in breaking the cycle of poverty and fostering sustainable futures for families and generations to come. Supported by a dedicated Board of Directors, Managers, teachers, volunteers, and a community of supporters, the foundation stands as a testament to the transformative power of education and collective effort.
